'Jean Miller's Paintings'
A profile by Cecily Sash.

.
Jean Miller started painting at the age of 68.  In her youth she was a professional dancer and actor, performing regularly at the Theatre Royal, Windsor, which was managed by her uncle, and also on the London stage, and on tour. She married a fellow actor, Michael Miller, and lived a life in the theatre until the birth of her children.  After her husband’s death, she moved to Hay on Wye, where she has built a successful career as an artist, her vibrant paintings achieving phenomenal local popularity, and being sought increasingly by visitors to the annual Hay Festival.
Cecily Sash, who inspired this book, and encouraged Jean Miller’s work from her early days, left her native South Africa in 1974 and came to live in England.  She settled in Herefordshire, first near Kington, then near Leominster, before finally moving to the Welsh border town, Presteigne.  In South Africa, Cecily Sash was well known as a painter and designer of mosaics and tapestries.  She was also held in high regard as an art educator through her role as senior lecturer in the Department of Fine Arts at the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.  In Britain she has continued her work as artist and teacher since opening Leominster’s first painting school, The Granary, in 1979.  Over the years her work has featured in many exhibitions, one of the most recent in London at the Duncan Campbell Fine Art Gallery in 2005.  In Presteigne she is vigorously engaged teaching both children and adult groups at her fine studio.
